BUCHAREST (FIBA EuroBasket Women 2017 Qualifiers) – Romania are hoping they can utilise the considerable talent of Ashley Walker to give their prospects of reaching FIBA EuroBasket Women 2017 a major boost.
The Romanian government has given the green light to Walker suiting up for her adopted country after it was confirmed she had been granted citizenship. It therefore looks like the forward may well feature during the last two games of the forthcoming qualifying window - something which would give Romania a tremendous lift.
Currently suiting up for Reyer Venezia in the Italian League and EuroCup Women, the 29-year-old impressed in EuroLeague Women last season at Beretta Famila Schio where she averaged 10.4 points and 7.8 rebounds. She is having a similarly productive campaign so far this year with Venezia.
Romania appeared in the EuroBasket Women Final Round last year for the first time after co-hosting the event with Hungary. They still have an opportunity to make the 2017 edition, since they are third in Group G with a 2-2 record and will now face Israel at home and Turkey on the road.
The potential inclusion of Walker would also refuel a roster which will be missing the considerable influence of Claudia Pop, who is set to be sidelined by injury.
The game against Israel is due to be played out in front of more than 5,000 fans in Cluj, with supporters no doubt keen to roar their favourites a little closer towards Final Round.
